The Arts Audiences are full and enthusiasm is at its peak for arts and entertainment in Gaston County. Under the umbrella of the United Arts Councils of Gaston County, arts organizations provide a variety of cultural programming in the community. The professionally staffed arts council strives to encourage, support and promote the arts. There are several community theater groups in Gaston County, including drama groups at Gaston College and Belmont Abbey as well as groups at several churches in the area. Little theater organizations in Gastonia, Cherryville and Belmont bring audiences performances ranging from the classics to modern commedy and drama. At least four music organizations call Gaston County home, including the Gastonia Choral Society, Gastonia Music Club, Sharps and Flats Music Club and the Gastonia Music Foundation. In addition to performances by these organizations, events are sponsored by the Gastonia Community Concert Association, recreation departments, schools and colleges. There are also several museums, including the Schiele Museum and the Gaston County Museum of Art and History. Each season brings its own array of arts and cultural activities to Gaston County. The Gaston Gazette's Starving Artists Festival caps off summer each September on the newspaper's grounds and attracts several hundred artists and craftsmen from up and down the East Coast. For many, the festival is the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season.
