City Council meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 181 South St. and on the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at Gaston County Courthouse Public Room, 325 N. Marietta St.


Trash Service

Crisis Assistance Ministry of Christians and Jews of Greater Gastonia

Works with families facing emergency situations related to basic life support needs of food, shelter, utilities, heat and medicine. Maintains a food pantry and a furniture ministry. Provides limited financial assistance and makes referrals. Serves the Greater Gastonia area. Emergency assistance hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday.

BUSES

Fares

Regular fare — 75 cents, transfers are free. Children under five ride free with paying adult customer. Fares for the elderly and/or handicapped are 35 cents and transfers are free.

Ticket books — Good for 10 rides are available for $7.50, or $3.50 for the elderly and/or handicapped.

Senior Citizen Discount — 65 or older can ride for 35 cents with proof of age or a Social Security Health Insurance card.

Exact change — Have exact fare, ticket or transfer ready when boarding. Drivers are not allowed to make change. Transfers must be used within 75 minutes of the time on the transfer. They are not valid for round trips. You must get the transfer when you board.

Buying tickets — Tickets may be purchased at Bradley Station, 121 N. Oakland St., or the City of Gastonia, Revenue Collection Division, 181 South St.


Bus Stops
All bus routes begin and end at Bradley Station at the corner of Oakland and Main. Most buses run once an hour on the hour or once an hour on the half hour. Call (704) 866-6855 for a schedule.


Boarding
Riders may board at any designated bus stop. Assist the driver by using a hand signal if you want the bus to stop. Once aboard, ring the bell a block in advance to let the operator know you’d like to get off at the next bus stop.

Handicap-Accessible Buses
Gastonia Transit has seven handicap-accessible buses featuring improved wheelchair lifts.


Van Service
Gastonia Transit ADA Van Service provides handicapped people with rides to doctors, hospitals, shopping centers and other places within the city limits. Vans are specially equipped for the needs of handicapped people. The cost is $1.50 per one-way ride. A book of 10 tickets costs $15. Interested people should apply to Gastonia Transit to show they meet the qualifications. Ride reservations must be made a day in advance. Call (704) 866-6056.


Hours
Gastonia Transit operates 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. There is no Sunday service and no service on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

GASTONIA PARKS

Parks operated by the City of Gastonia are open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Many provide tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, softball and baseball fields, picnic areas and playgrounds.

Picnic shelters are available on a first-come, first-serve basis at Bradley, Erwin, Lineberger, Phillips, Rankin Lake and Jeffers parks.

Shelters may be reserved by groups or individuals for a small fee by contacting the individual park office.

Athletic fields are used by American Legion teams and area high schools during baseball season. Facilities available for rent.

Martha Rivers Park: Youth Sports Complex includes: picnic tables, walking-jogging trails, playground equipment. The park is located on Neal Hawkins Road.
