Health Commission
OBJECTIVES

Develop a community wide agenda to improve health.

Identify opportunities for people and organizations to work together to improve healthcare in the community.

Develop strategies to contain overall community healthcare costs.

Create a forum so that diverse groups can participate in dialogue about healthiness, healthcare and resource allocation in Gaston County.

The results of these efforts are expected to be a cooperative set of actions in preventing, as well as treating sickness for more people at a cost acceptable to the community.

GMH’s parent company, CaroMont Health, employs more than 2,600 people, making it one of the county’s largest employers. More than 250 doctors representing more than 30 medical specialties are members of Gaston Memorial’s medical staff. More than 100,000 patients are served each year.

GASTON HEART CENTER
Open-heart surgery is the newest cardiac procedure being offered at Gaston Memorial. Combined with other heart services including cardiac catheterization, cardiac rehabilitation, a pacemaker clinic, a monthly cardiac support group and many cardiac diagnostic services, The Gaston Heart Center, Carolinas Heart Institute Gastonia, is a comprehensive cardiac care program.

Cardiologists from the Sanger Clinic, Mid Carolina Cardiology and Gaston Internal Medicine work with a special team of radiologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, techs and other patient care staff to offer the best care to our heart patients.

The 12-bed Cardiovascular Surgery Unit prepares patients for surgery and cares for them as they recuperate. A Coronary Care intensive care unit for seriously ill patients and its step-down sister unit, Progressive Coronary Care, for patients with less serious heart conditions, have state-of-the-art equipment and well-trained staff.

Special clinical paths administered by health care professionals help patients with heart attacks, congestive heart failure or angine recover and return home quickly.

COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CARE CENTER
Gaston Healthcare
The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Gaston Memorial provides physical, psychosocial and educational services to cancer patients and their families.

The center’s 31-bed oncology unit offers advanced proven cancer treatments, including an outpatient chemotherapy program. Nurses give patients instructions to make treatments as comfortable as possible. A family room is available for family members to relax and even spend the night. Patients and families also may attend a variety of support groups.

The Pain Center helps patients who are diagnosed with cancer pinpoint and describe their pain symptoms. Medical and radiation oncologists, an anesthesiologist, a psychologist, a nurse clinician and a pharmacist will review the case and make recommendations for treating pain.

The center’s Radiation Oncology Center provides high-tech cancer treatment with two linear accelerators which deliver radiation to the desired area with no effect on surrounding healthy cells. The cancer center also offers a Tumor Registry, which tracks statistics on cancer patients and provides lifetime follow-up on each patient.

A comprehensive support program, POWER, offers exercise, information, a support group and education for people in all stages of treatment.

ORTHOPEDIC SERVICES
Gaston Memorial offers advanced care for the orthopedic patient including a Total Joint Replacement program designed to help patients return home and recover faster.

Orthopedic physicians work with nurses, physical therapists and technicians who help patients through surgery, recovery and rehabilitation. The 48-bed unit provides extensive education on recuperation at home following hospitalization.

GENERAL SURGERY
More than 6,000 surgical procedures are performed each year in eight operating rooms and two cystoscopy rooms in a high-technology setting. Surgeons use three different lasers in a minimally invasive program, which includes gall bladder removal, appendectomies, kidney stone elimination, hernia repair and some hysterectomies.

Only small incisions are required for many of these procedures, which reduce post-operative pain and length of hospital stay. Other advanced procedures available include sinus endoscopy, arthroscopic surgery and podiatry. The department provides comprehensive anesthesia services with an active pain control program featuring patient-controlled analgesia.

Services are provided by more than 50 doctors with support from certified nurses and surgical technologists.
