Free and Reduced Lunches

All students enrolled in the Gaston County Schools are given an opportunity to apply for free and reduced lunch. To apply: a student must complete a Free and Reduced Price Meal application form. The form must be signed by the child’s parents and returned to the school. Eligibility for free and reduced lunch is based on household income and number of members in the household.


DID YOU KNOW? 18,000 lunches and 5,000 breakfasts are served daily in Gaston County Schools cafeterias. In 1998-99, 900,000 breakfasts and 3.3 million lunches were served in our school cafeterias.

SNOW DAYS

During extremely bad weather it sometimes becomes necessary to close schools. On mornings when the weather is bad, here is how to find out if schools in the Gaston County area are closed listen to one of the area radio or TV stations for an announcement. Do not telephone the weather bureau, radio or TV stations, school officials or schools.

The absence of any announcement means that the schools will be open as usual.

MAKE UP DAYS

State law requires 5 make-up days to be designated in the calendar. Please take this into consideration when planning vacations.

Gaston County SchoolsGaston County has the sixth largest public school system in the state with more than 29,000 students. The school system has 51 schools.

Schools begin and end the school day at different times to accommodate bus routes, the instructional program and parent needs. Precise opening and closing times will be provided by individual schools.

Present building occupied by the First Wesleyan Christian School and Day Care was first occupied in fall of 1986. The new building includes 22 classrooms, a library/computer laboratory, offices, full-sized gymnasium/cafeteria and kitchen. The school currently serves 103 children in the daycare program, 232 children in grades K through 5. The curriculum is A Beka. Registration takes place beginning the first week in March until all openings are filled.

Gaston Christian Schools, Inc. is a private, non-denominational Christian school with three locations in Gaston County — in the educational facilities at Parkwood Baptist Church, Catawba Heights Baptist Church, and at the old Sacred Heart college campus in Belmont. CHARTER SCHOOLS

Gaston County has two charter schools, privately run public schools.

Highland Charter Public School was formed in 1997. It has about 95 students in kindergarten and first grade. For more information, call 866-6342 or 866-8721.

Piedmont Community Charter School opened August 7. Its charter is for kindergarten through fifth grade. it expects 240 students. For more information, call 853-2428.

Gaston CollegeGASTON COLLEGE

Background

Gaston College is a two-year, comprehensive community college established to serve the citizens of Gaston and Lincoln counties. Chartered in 1963, it is one of the 58 public community colleges in the state. Gaston College is an open-door institution offering two-year college transfer programs, two-year associate degrees, diplomas, certificates, and continuing education programs.

Locations

The Gaston Campus is located on Highway 321 between Dallas and Gastonia, approximately two miles north of I-85.

The Lincoln Campus is at 511 S. Aspen St. in Lincolnton. From Gastonia, travel north on US 321, take Exit 20 (the High Shoals/Gastonia Exit). Turn left, proceed north on NC Hwy. 155 for 7.3 miles. Hwy 155 will become South Aspen Street. The Lincoln Campus of Gaston College in the renovated old Lincolnton High School is on the right.
