GASTON COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT CITIZENS’ ACADEMY

The Citizens’ Academy is one of several programs that have developed from the Gaston County Police Community-oriented Policing philosophy.

The academy is a 10-week program designed to provide Gaston County residents, in an academy setting, first-hand information about how their police department works.

This year, Gaston County police offered a two-week summer program for youth.

The Department attempts to reflect the broadest possible range within the community. This includes young and old, men and women, and representatives of special ethnic, cultural and civic groups.

Participation

Requires a commitment of one night a week for the 10-week period. Classes are held on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:45 p.m. at the Gaston County Police Department, 2300 Remount Road, Gastonia.

Subjects Covered

Sessions include patrol procedures, major crime and drug investigations, juvenile investigations, community services programs, records, crime analysis, training functions and property/evidence management.

There will also be demonstrations from the ERT, K-9, Hazardous Devices and Crime Scene Search Unit Teams.

Also, at some point beyond the second session, members may ride in a patrol car for one shift to see first-hand what officers see and hear and what they are trained to do under a variety of circumstances.

Throughout, participants are encouraged to ask questions and discuss topics with department personnel.

Purpose

The Academy is designed to increase understanding between citizens and the police through education. The intent is to acquaint citizens with law enforcement’s role in the criminal justice system and provide increased understanding of the tasks police officers face in their daily work.

With better understanding, it becomes easier for police and citizens to find realistic solutions to neighborhood problems.

Instructors

The instructors are officers and personnel from the department who teach in their own areas of expertise. Each has years of training and experience in the subject. The officers also bring street experience into the classroom.

To Apply

Contact the Support Services Captain at the Gaston County Police Department for an application. The phone number is 866-3320.
